4-Day School Week

Our district community is meeting for a third time today for our planning meeting.  This week we will be seeking community input through a survey and community forum.  Please join the discussion today after school to learn more.

Updated Cell Phone Use in K-8 Building

Please share this updated cell phone rule with your students (primarily 3-8).  I have created a tracking form and shared it with teachers and office staff.

We understand that many students have phones for family contact and emergency use; however, due to digital content issues, harassment, and inappropriate use, the following updates have been made to our cell phone use rule.

Cell phones may be brought to the K8 school if they are kept off and out of sight during the school day. Students may use their cell phones before (8:10 AM) and after school (3:15 PM).

The K8 office phone is available for use by students for emergencies. Additionally, parents may call the K8 office at 258.7357 to leave a message for their child.

Violation of cell phone use in school will result in:

1st offense – Cell phone is taken to the front office until the end of the day.
2nd offense – Cell phone taken to the front office and parent must pick it up. Students will serve lunch detention.
3rd offense – Cell phone is taken to the front office, parent picks up, and cell not allowed at school for the remainder of the school year. The student will serve lunch detention.

Character Strong / Purposeful People

Please take a look at the resource and activities with the character-strong website.  This week, the challenge for Principals is to share positiveness!

Monday Memo

Thank you's

Charles, (8th grade) thank you for helping out with the district strategic plan meeting.

PBIS Team, thank you for working late and helping re-launch our program.

Jen, Mandy, and Becca, thank you for being our emergency subs and for helping fill our voids! You are greatly appreciated.

PBIS Work

Please look over and discuss the PBIS Matrix with your teaching partner during one of your shared planning times on Monday or Tuesday. What would you add or change?  The PBIS team will be connecting again on Tuesday to continue working on the Matrix and start an outline for the incentive program.

Social-Emotional Support

Each Monday, our student support team(Bryce, Emily, Sherri, Erin, Katt, and myself) are meeting to review supports and systems for our students.  This week we are looking at the PBIS Matrix and CRISIS Plan.  We end our meetings by reviewing students of concern.  The goal is to identify and support our students who are struggling.  Please reach out to any one of the student support staff to discuss students of concerns.

Winter Testing

Please let me know if you need assistance with your winter assessments.  Tammy is working on the online access for the DRA3 and will have more info to you early this week.   The MAPS assessment is all rostered and ready.

OSSI Coaching

In February, our OSSI Coaches will be scheduling meetings with teaching teams to review winter data and discuss strategies for tier one and tier two classroom support.  These sessions will start once your team has wrapped up your testing.

Weekly Staff Memo

Thank you!

  • Sherri and Chanel have been doing an outstanding job maintaining the COVID protocols and testing. Thank you for your continued support. We all know that this is not an easy job.
  • Big thank you goes to Becca and Harmony for their help with pictures for the first smore memo.
  • K8 Team, last Thursday and Friday, we had to do lots of shuffling to fill the voids with staffing. Thank you for everyone's flexibility and assistance.

COVID Spike

We expect the spike in COVID numbers to remain elevated for the next few weeks. The WA State Department of Health believes we will not start to see a decline until early to mid-February. Please help us maintain our COVID protocols. This variant is complex, as many individuals show little to no symptoms. Sadly, I have some elderly friends who currently exhibit severe symptoms, and one has been diagnosed with COVID pneumonia. Please continue to be careful. Please review the COVID Quarantine Test chart emailed from Mr. Spear last Tuesday. Here is a link to it:  COVID protocol.

Staff Shortage

  • Custodial Staff: Please help by cleaning tabletops and setting garbage in the hall.
  • Transportation: Some drivers are going to be doubling up bus routes. This will cause some students to be delayed arriving at school and others will depart earlier. More information will be provided.

K8 PBIS Team

Due to a spike in COVID, the PBIS off-site workshop has been canceled for this week.  I am in the process of developing some after-school work sessions. The goal is to review the current behavior expectations and launch our incentive system. Then, in April, this team will attend the PBIS State Conference.

Observation Sign-up

Please sign-up for a formal observation at this link: Formal Observation Sign-up

Monday (afternoon) Meeting

Thank you

I greatly appreciate everyone who helped out covering Amy's leave. Thank you. Additionally, last week we had several individuals assist with pretty serious student concerns. Thank you!

Student Photo for Newsletters

We have all heard the old adage that a picture is worth 1000 words. I love using photos to show what our great work looks like; however, to do so, we need to make all students have the proper media release from our parents. Please check with Tammy before using any photos in your newsletters or posting online. Additionally, please share any images you have taken for me to post.

School Safety

Please park in the front parking lot during our snowy season, as the maintenance team's priority will be to plow that front parking lot and clear the sidewalks.

Strategic Planning Student Surveys

Later this week, I will share a student survey link and instructions for the student perception survey. The survey window will be open from Wednesday to Friday.

Boys Basketball

The middle school's boys basketball team is underway with a great turnout. Their first game will be next Wednesday at Wellpinit.

TPEP Walk-Throughs and Formal Observations

I have calendared some time to help ensure that I am able to get into classrooms more frequently for observations. When I am in your classroom, actively typing on my computer, I am documenting an observation. The observation will be recorded in an online Marzano tool called iObservation.

In addition to my walkthroughs, I would like to complete a formal observation with all staff members by the end of February. Monday and Wednesday tend to be the best days for me to complete a formal observation. Each formal observation will include a pre- and post-observation meeting. Please signup for a formal observation at this link: Formal Observation Sign-up

Outside Recess
When the temperature is below 20 degrees, recess needs to be indoors.  Before school, the gym will be open for the K-5.  The cafeteria and middle school hall will be open to the middle school.

Morning and afternoon recess will need to be hosted in the classroom, as the gym will be in use for scheduled PE classes.

I am working on a lunch solution as the gym is not available for inside recess.  Please stay tuned for more information.

Camper Assembly Makeup
Our assembly is tentatively rescheduled for January 14th.  I'll confirm later this week.

Duty Schedule Revisions to Cover Amy's Leave

Good Morning,

Yesterday was sure a busy day. We had two concerning crises with students in the middle school. I greatly appreciate our student support team's united effort to support our students and their families.

Amy Buche will be taking a leave of absence to help with her family. Her son suffered a spinal cord injury in a car accident over the break. We do not have a sub-pool for our classified positions; therefore, we need to make changes to fill in while Amy is out. I met with Mandy and Mark yesterday to review our para duty schedule and classroom supports.

Here are the duty schedule changes; everything else remains the same:

Before School Duty:

Elementary Playground Zones (See attached image)

    • Phyllis: Cover play area/swings/field
    • Maureen: East end of building/field/spinning toy
    • Mark: Big Toy/Line up area

Bus Drop Off

    • Bambi: pickup one-on-one
    • Crystal: pickup one-on-on
    • Brett: Supervision (will also include a walk-through of the cafeteria)

Cafeteria

    • Katt
    • Nicole

AM Recess:

Kristi: 3-5th Grade (M,W,F)

Crystal Miller: 3-5th Grade (M,W,F)

PM Recess:

Dani and Mandy: 3-5 Grade Recess (T/Th)

Elementary Lunch Detentions

Katt: K-2 Lunch in MS Basecamp Room

Katt: 3-5 Lunch in MS Basecamp Room

I am also working to replace the classroom support for Mrs. Matherly, I will be meeting with her and a few other teachers to discuss the available options.

I appreciate everyone helping cover the needed changes.

Thank you,

Brett

Monday Memo

Happy New Year!

I hope that everyone had a restful break. I am so thankful to have had several opportunities to connect with family and friends. I am looking forward to being back at school with our students.

Over the Break

As an 8th grade student, Seth Finley is helping the high school team fill a needed weight division. In his first high school tournament, Seth placed 3rd! Great job!!

Survey

Thank you to everyone who completed the survey before Christmas break. I enjoyed receiving everyone's feedback. We will review the key take ways and actions needed at our staff meeting on Friday.

PBIS Team

On January 18, we will have a team attending the PBIS training at the ESD101. This training is a relaunch to PBIS and aligns with our OSSI grant goal. This team will be reporting back to the building's team(Primary, Intermediate, and middle school) and help us launch our incentive program and more!

Marzano Instruction Framework

As I walk through classrooms this week, I will be looking for and documenting evidence for Criterion 5.1; Organizing the Physical Layout of the Classroom. Please see the possible teacher evidence on the chart below. For additional information on the Marzano Instructional Framework visit:
