K8 Weekly Memo

Points of Interest

Person Leave

As a parent, one of my favorite things to do is support my son and his interests.  Baseball season is upon us, and I will be using personal leave to depart work a few minutes early on his game days.

Staff Support

Do you have a student of concern who may need a little TLC? Please connect with Ms. Abercrombie and share the details.  The student support team meets each Monday to view our struggle and fragile students.

Health Presentations

It is the time of the year at we present our health-required curriculums.  Nurse Sherri is sending out letters and will be hosting a parent preview night on May 23rd at 4:00 PM.

Kindergarten Registration

Please invite your friends and neighbors who may have a child enrolling in Kindergarten to stop by the school and complete an enrollment packet.

Building Security Updates

We are making some good ground in updating our security systems.

  • Recess Duty: This week, I'll be meeting with our recess supervisors to implement better visual and communication protocols.  We will be using high-visual vests, radios, and first aid kits outside.

  • Doors Locked: All classroom doors need to be locked and shut throughout the day.

  • The camera system continue to be updated throughout the entire campus

  • Vape detectors have been install is the majority of our bathrooms.  The system is rolling out nicely.,

MTSS Update

MTSS Roundtable Process

Skyward and FastBridge are not communicating with each other to automatically update rosters. I am working diligently to fix them. Please check your roster and let me know if  it is accurate. I do not want to be fixing as we start testing if at all possible. Thank you!

I am out from the afternoon of April 25 through April 28 to attend the PBIS conference.  I requested and planned for a sub but wanted you to have a heads up in case something falls through.

A while back we sent out a survey to staff asking about how you felt tier 1 PBIS was being implemented. Areas of strength included behavior expectations having been taught and identified, feedback to and acknowledgement of students, and faculty involvement. Results noted that we have a discipline data system that is used for decision-making, but it is not easily accessed and used monthly.  Other areas of growth included fidelity of tier 1 implementation, team composition and operating procedures, professional development,  clarity around problem behavior/discipline policies, and family/community involvement. This feedback will help guide the PBIS team next year. We will also be sending out a school climate survey to staff, families, and students to provide further direction.

MTSS Update

MTSS Roundtable Process

So far our roundtable team has met to discuss ten students and create success plans for them with progress monitoring and follow-ups scheduled. Issues addressed range from grade placement change, behavior issues, to academic issues.  Our last meeting of the year will be on May 23; after that, we will reflect on our work this year to improve plans and systems for next year.

Thinking ahead: There will be another data day for K-5 once spring benchmarking is completed. We will be flagging kids to focus on when school resumes in the fall and working on class placements. More to come!

Also, I have updated rosters in FastBridge so you are hopefully not seeing students who have withdrawn. Their data is still in the system (in case they return). Let me know if I missed anyone!

K8 Memo

"We, as a community, will develop confident, well-rounded, and sought-after graduates who are prepared for the future"

Welcome back.  I hope that everyone found some time to relax over spring break.  While many enjoyed the respite and excitement of traveling over the break, it is important to remember that some of our students and staff may have had different experiences.  Our school, staff, and daily routines are the stability and security for many of our students.  Spring break, especially gloomy ones like ours, may have been more difficult for some students.  Please keep an eye out for our children who may need some extra support and encouragement this week,

Additionally, our daily routines and rules may be a distant memory for some.  Please make a conscious effort to help all students transition back into the school rhythm.  Here are some simple, actionable ways you can make this transition a positive one:

  • Ease into academic demands.

  • Review expectations and routines:

    • Morning/dismissal routines

    • Responding to a signal

    • Lining up

    • Hallway expectations

    • Restroom behaviors

    • Small-group routines

    • Lunch and recess rules

  • Engage students in personal and/or academic goal-setting.

  • Extend extra patience and empathy.

  • Revisit favorite activities.

Good Reads

“Those weeks between Spring and Summer break are crucial times in the school year. It’s when all the major revision and review happens before the final exams, and there’s a lot of great material to cover during those weeks, too! However, it’s often the point in the school year when students are the least motivated. Here are twenty activities…”  Read more

As we approached testing season, the already anxiety-prone fourth graders I teach began asking questions about test dates, format, and content. These signs of stress, combined with antsiness brought on by the arrival of long-awaited spring weather and a week of spring break, all came at once this year. I was feeling stressed, too.”  Read more

How is your progress on the 15-Day Challenge.  Please continue to work on your unit posters.  Here are some supportive links:

State Testing

I am not sure that the old adage that ‘practice makes perfect’ is true with state testing. However, I firmly believe that when students complete the practice and training tests, they perform better on the SBAC! Please review the practice and training tests and schedule some time into your teaching to help focus and prepare our students for the SBAC.

Student Expectations

Thank you for the help with hallway access and phone use. Please continue to monitor our hallways and help our students to be safe, respectful, and responsible. Also, please use the hall pass when students are out of your classroom. The semester is a perfect time to review our PBIS rules and expectation posters.
