K8 Weekly Memo

WINS FOR THE WEEK

  • Coach Vince enjoyed meeting with staff and looks forward to joining us again on Nov. 10 and Nov. 18.

  • The student Support Team demonstrated a collaborative spirit working on some hard tasks.

  • PLC Leading Coalition Team worked to prepare for their PLC times to unpack the standards.

  • Student Access Day had many students carving pumpkins and working to improve their grades.

  • MS Girls Basketball started the season with a win, and Boys football wrapped up!

Thoughtful Reflection

One of the most effective teaching strategies is modeling. With modeling, the teacher engages students by showing them how to perform a skill while describing each step with a rationale. This provides students with both a visual and verbal example of what they will be expected to do.

As educators, we often model learning. Our students are exceptionally astute about our behaviors. Not only do they watch our academic behaviors, but they watch how we model day-to-day rules in the school. They look to our specific behaviors and language patterns around school rules to see how it affects our school experiences.

As teachers, we need to act out the desired behaviors, showing what each rule looks and sounds like.

  • Are we modeling what we expect of kids?

  • Cell phones use?

  • Noise in the hall?

  • Treating others with kindness & respect?

  • Patients

  • What can each of us do to help improve the culture in our school?

Modeling Tips

Monday is a good time to read and review the rules. It also is a good time to model another related expectation and think about a focus for the week. "Let's think about sitting next to a few new people or inviting a new person to play a game."

THE CHARGER PROMISE

"We, as a community, will develop confident, well rounded, and sought after graduates who are prepared for the future"

POINTS OF INTEREST

First Quarter Ends

On the 1st of November, our first quarter ends.  Please be sure to post grades and prepare FastBridge family reports for parent/teacher conferences.  The 1st Quarter Report cards will be shared at conferences, and then mailed home to those who failed to make conferences.

Parent/Teacher Conferences - ACTION NEEDED

Due to the success of our HS Charger Volleyball, it has been decided to move the parent/teacher conference to Nov 7 & 8.  These are full student days with conferences going from 3:30 PM to 7:30 PM.  The longer days are calculated into the teacher's contracts.

Please be sure to connect with your student's parents to schedule conferences; some parents may need to adjust the conference time to meet their schedules. Please make all the needed changes to accommodate our families and communicate any changes to Tammy.

Confidentiality - ACTION NEEDED

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records.  As MWSD staff, we all are required to help protect the privacy of our students.  Before you share student information (records, stories, situations, discipline, etc.), stop and think about FERPA!  Please help protect our student's privacy.

Classroom Discipline - ACTION NEEDED

  • PBIS expectations reinforced, and tickets

  • TAB: Take a Break Chair

  • TAB Out: Buddy Classroom

  • 3 Redirections prior to lunch detentions

  • Referrals: paper or online

Halloween Festivities

Costume parade and parties are the last hour of today. Our parade will start at 2:25 PM with the third grade walking down the hall toward the kindergarten room.  Along the way, all k-5 classrooms will join as the train goes by their classroom. Once outside, the parade will march through the playground, to the flagpole, down to the high school entrance, through the square, into the cafeteria, then the K8 gym, and then each class will roll into their classroom as the parade continues towards the kindergarten classrooms.

Remember, all treats for the Halloween Parties must be store-bought.

TPEP Observation and Goal Setting

As we start working through formal observations and continue analyzing data to set our student growth goals, I will send out individual emails to schedule observations and mini-conferences. Please be sure you can access eVAL app on EDS. Connect with Mike if you need help logging onto EDS.

2nd Quarter Student Access Day

Please let me know if you are interested in coordinating an enrichment activity or field trip for the second quarter access days.  We only have five access days this next quarter.

MTSS Updates

  • Please remember that we are focusing our push in help on Reading until we can build more capacity.

  • Although Reading is the focus this year, we still need to keep an eyeball on Math. Coach Vince can help us look at data to adjust our core instruction and make decisions during the math adoption process
