Staff Weekly Memo

K8 Team,

I hope each of you had a restful and refreshing weekend. Last week was a shining example of what makes our school special — from the creativity and camaraderie during Covert Dress-Up Days, to the joy on students' faces at the Page Ahead Book Giveaway. Our athletic teams represented us well, and I'm grateful for the thoughtful planning that went into preparing our students for the upcoming state testing.

While the recent levy results were disappointing — coming up just 50 votes short — please know that your work is deeply valued and making a difference every day. Stay encouraged, stay connected, and keep leaning into the small and steady successes we're achieving together.

I am incredibly proud of the growth we're seeing in our PLC work. It's clear our collective efforts are positively impacting student learning. Together, we are living the Mary Walker Promise: developing confident, well-rounded, and sought-after graduates, ready for their futures.

Let's continue that momentum this week — you are appreciated!

~Brett

Staff Appreciation Week

This week marks the beginning of Staff Appreciation Week, and I want to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude for each of you. Your dedication, compassion, and resilience make Mary Walker more than just a school — you make it a true community. Whether you're teaching lessons, driving buses, preparing meals, answering phones, supporting students, or keeping our spaces clean and safe, your contributions are seen, valued, and appreciated every day.

In celebration of you, we are recognizing this as VIP Week — Very Important Person Week — because every member of our team truly is that: very important. Throughout the week, we'll have fun opportunities to highlight and honor the incredible work you do.

A big thank you to Dani and Jaymi for their work in decorating the staff lounge, Jo Moss for sharing some fun ideas, and the admin team for collaborating on this week's treats. Be on the lookout for small surprises and intentional moments of appreciation.

Let's take this time to lift one another up. Your work matters. YOU matter. Thank you for all that you do to make Mary Walker such a special place.

Points of Interest

State Testing Begins This Week (Middle School)

This week kicks off state testing for our middle school students. Our staff has done excellent work preparing students to feel confident and ready. Students have practiced with the platform and reviewed sample questions — now it's time for them to shine!

  • Please ensure your room is test-ready by 8:50 AM each testing day.

  •  Details and schedule here: [MS Testing Info]

Let's create calm, focused testing environments that support every student's best effort.

Transitions & Supervision: Every Minute Matters

Please help us maintain a safe and structured learning environment by:

  • Supervising students at all times.

  • Sticking to bell-to-bell instruction — it truly makes a difference.

  • Releasing students only at designated times (especially lunch and end-of-day).

Research shows that tight transitions and consistent supervision support both academic and social-emotional success. Thank you for helping make our school a place where students are safe and learning is maximized.

WSU Family NIght Out for 6 and 7th Grade Families

We're excited to host our WSU Family Night Out this Thursday evening!

  •  Chipotle dinner provided

  • Learn how WSU Health Sciences is supporting our students

  • Build relationships with our school community

Please help encourage your 6th and 7th grade families to attend — it will be a great evening of connection and celebration.

MTSS News

The Page Ahead Book Fair was a huge success last Thursday night! We had one third of our kindergarten through second grade students come in with their families and pick out 12 books each for summer reading! The parents listened to and participated in a presentation about the importance of reading at home, especially through the summer months. A huge shout out to The Friends of the Loon Lake Library! They came and were a HUGE help! I made myself some new friends and am excited to see how this friendship plays out (it will most definitely benefit our students in a huge way)!

On account of the book event, the MTSS room is currently set up with a large number of books, so we will not be running groups that require the use of our room Monday and possibly Tuesday as we need the rest of the k-2 kiddos to come through and pick out their books. A sign up via email for times for k-2 teachers to bring their classes through had been sent out.

Have a wonderful first week of May, Happy Staff Appreciation Week, and first week of state testing Middle School!
