K8 Weekly Memo

WINS FOR THE WEEK

  • Coach Vince enjoyed meeting with staff and looks forward to joining us again on Nov. 10 and Nov. 18.

  • The student Support Team demonstrated a collaborative spirit working on some hard tasks.

  • PLC Leading Coalition Team worked to prepare for their PLC times to unpack the standards.

  • Student Access Day had many students carving pumpkins and working to improve their grades.

  • MS Girls Basketball started the season with a win, and Boys football wrapped up!

Thoughtful Reflection

One of the most effective teaching strategies is modeling. With modeling, the teacher engages students by showing them how to perform a skill while describing each step with a rationale. This provides students with both a visual and verbal example of what they will be expected to do.

As educators, we often model learning. Our students are exceptionally astute about our behaviors. Not only do they watch our academic behaviors, but they watch how we model day-to-day rules in the school. They look to our specific behaviors and language patterns around school rules to see how it affects our school experiences.

As teachers, we need to act out the desired behaviors, showing what each rule looks and sounds like.

  • Are we modeling what we expect of kids?

  • Cell phones use?

  • Noise in the hall?

  • Treating others with kindness & respect?

  • Patients

  • What can each of us do to help improve the culture in our school?

Modeling Tips

Monday is a good time to read and review the rules. It also is a good time to model another related expectation and think about a focus for the week. "Let's think about sitting next to a few new people or inviting a new person to play a game."

THE CHARGER PROMISE

"We, as a community, will develop confident, well rounded, and sought after graduates who are prepared for the future"

POINTS OF INTEREST

First Quarter Ends

On the 1st of November, our first quarter ends.  Please be sure to post grades and prepare FastBridge family reports for parent/teacher conferences.  The 1st Quarter Report cards will be shared at conferences, and then mailed home to those who failed to make conferences.

Parent/Teacher Conferences - ACTION NEEDED

Due to the success of our HS Charger Volleyball, it has been decided to move the parent/teacher conference to Nov 7 & 8.  These are full student days with conferences going from 3:30 PM to 7:30 PM.  The longer days are calculated into the teacher's contracts.

Please be sure to connect with your student's parents to schedule conferences; some parents may need to adjust the conference time to meet their schedules. Please make all the needed changes to accommodate our families and communicate any changes to Tammy.

Confidentiality - ACTION NEEDED

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records.  As MWSD staff, we all are required to help protect the privacy of our students.  Before you share student information (records, stories, situations, discipline, etc.), stop and think about FERPA!  Please help protect our student's privacy.

Classroom Discipline - ACTION NEEDED

  • PBIS expectations reinforced, and tickets

  • TAB: Take a Break Chair

  • TAB Out: Buddy Classroom

  • 3 Redirections prior to lunch detentions

  • Referrals: paper or online

Halloween Festivities

Costume parade and parties are the last hour of today. Our parade will start at 2:25 PM with the third grade walking down the hall toward the kindergarten room.  Along the way, all k-5 classrooms will join as the train goes by their classroom. Once outside, the parade will march through the playground, to the flagpole, down to the high school entrance, through the square, into the cafeteria, then the K8 gym, and then each class will roll into their classroom as the parade continues towards the kindergarten classrooms.

Remember, all treats for the Halloween Parties must be store-bought.

TPEP Observation and Goal Setting

As we start working through formal observations and continue analyzing data to set our student growth goals, I will send out individual emails to schedule observations and mini-conferences. Please be sure you can access eVAL app on EDS. Connect with Mike if you need help logging onto EDS.

2nd Quarter Student Access Day

Please let me know if you are interested in coordinating an enrichment activity or field trip for the second quarter access days.  We only have five access days this next quarter.

MTSS Updates

  • Please remember that we are focusing our push in help on Reading until we can build more capacity.

  • Although Reading is the focus this year, we still need to keep an eyeball on Math. Coach Vince can help us look at data to adjust our core instruction and make decisions during the math adoption process

Thoughtful Reflection

Welcome Families by Focusing on Strengths by Justin Minkel

A focus on deficits hurts both struggling students and their families. We need to build families up—especially in these times. Families of struggling students feel defensive and hurt when communications with their child's school focus mainly on that child's deficits. Affirming students with families is important in the current climate of hostility.

Minkel describes three key ways teachers can shift the focus to students' strengths and take that more positive message to parents.

Moving the Dial to Strengths

    1. Let parents know you see their child's strengths.

    2. Listen to families.

    3. Reflect on families' cultures in the classroom.

A Crucial Time for Welcoming

POINTS OF INTEREST

Bully Prevention Month - ACTION NEEDED

Please take some time to discuss bully prevention. Create a powerful visual statement about uniting for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. Have each student writes a message on an orange strip of construction paper. The strips are then connected to illustrate the power of uniting for a common cause.

It is not too late to use last week's bully prevention activity. If you didn't do it please take time to discuss how students can report bullying at school and home. Below is a link to a poster that can help guide the conversation.

As we start working through formal observations and continue analyzing data to set our student growth goals, I will send out individual emails to schedule observations and mini-conferences. Please be sure you can access eVAL app on EDS. Connect with Mike if you need help logging onto EDS. This Wednesday at 7:30 AM, I will be hosting a short meeting to review goal setting and EDS Access; please feel free to stop by.

Increment Weather

We need to have inside recess when we have steady rain or a temperature below 20 degrees.

  • For the morning recess, before school, we will be rotating the use of the gym between primary, intermediate, and middle school. Middle school will have the gym next. The rest of the students need to be sent to their classrooms/halls for inside recess. All staff needs to help supervise.

  • Our prep recesses are small enough that we can use the covered play area on rainy days, but recess will need to be back in the classroom on cold days.

  • For lunch recess, the elementary can use the gym. The middle school can use the covered play area on rainy days; however, the hallways will need to be used for cold days.

I appreciate everyone's understanding and flexibility as we work to maintain safe and healthy recess' when we have incremental weather.

Student Access Day

Please let me know if you are interested in coordinating an enrichment activity or field trip for the second quarter access days.  We only have five access days this next quarter.

MTSS Updates

  • Diane shared our work so far at the admin meeting on Wednesday and conveyed the need for teachers to have time to work with data and plan for instruction.

  • We are not limited to the interventions listed in FastBridge. We are working to update their bank with our local options.

  • Middle School teachers have offered on-track students as supports for elementary teachers during their intervention period (1:45-2:35) on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Helpers would be available for twenty minute slots for activities like sight word practice, facts practice, recess buddies beginning Nov. 1. Please let Diane know if you would like a helper!

  • Let Diane know how she can help!  She would love to set a time with individual teachers to plan for strategies, groups, and progress monitoring. Please send questions and watch for updated information.

Thoughtful Reflection

What is a Morning Meeting? Morning meetings are a classroom management practice used to address students' social-emotional learning needs daily. Every morning, teachers gather their students in a circle (for 15 to 30 minutes) to interact with one another and kick-off the day. A great routine is Greeting, Sharing, Activity, and a Morning Message. This 15-30 minute routine will greatly enhance your teaching and learning.

POINTS OF INTEREST

Coach Vince Here on Thursday - ACTION NEEDED

Vince will be here on Thursday to review assessment data from FastBridge.  In preparation for his visit, please have the following prepared:

  • Your FastBridge screening report (either printed or on your computer)

  • Screening for Intervention information

  • Recommendations for Whole Group Instruction

Bully Prevention Month - ACTION NEEDED

For this week's bully prevention activity, please take time to discuss how students can report bullying at school and home.  Below is a link to a poster that can help guide the conversation.   https://www.pacer.org/bullying/classroom/elementary/activities/how-to-tell-an-adult.asp

Solution Room

The solution room is staffed for lunch detentions, teacher-scheduled sensory breaks, and referral discipline.  Some middle school students have migrated there to skip classes; this is not okay.  Additionally, an ISS can only be assigned after I process a referral.  Please contact me directly if you have a referral that you need to be immediately processed.

TPEP Goal Setting

On Friday's LID, we will review our SBAC and FastBrdge data to help provide the baseline for our student growth goals.  Here are some helpful links to review regarding student growth goals:

Extra Work from Kitchen

Our Kitchen staff is exceptionally helpful and committed to going the extra mile for our students.  It isn't easy to see them do extra work that is not used.  When ordering field trip lunches, please provide accurate numbers and make sure our students eat the lunches.  Thank you.

Great ShakeOut

More info to come, but in general, this standard drill and evacuation uses simple steps to inform all teachers and students how to perform Drop, Cover, and Hold On – a quake-safe action designed to protect lives and prevent injuries from falling furniture and flying objects than can become projectiles during ground shaking. Teachers and students will then evacuate the building according to the school disaster plan, as required for a quarterly or semi-annual earthquake safety drill.

We are in an area with a very limited risk of earthquakes; however, this drill will help our students understand how to respond in the event they are in a location where an earthquake happens.

Character Strong:

  • K-5 (Purposeful People) Moving through Responsibility. We should be covering week 3, and completing this character trait by the end of October. Gratitude is the character trait we will start in November.

  • 6-8 (Character Strong) By the end of October, we should be finishing lesson 9. For November, we will cover lessons 10-14.

Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week is the largest drug-abuse prevention campaign in the United States. Support our families and communities in nurturing the full potential of healthy, drug free youth. Please participate in our Red Ribbon Spirit week starting next Monday.
