K8 Staff Memo

This last week was another great week of teaching and learning in our building.  Sadly, or more frustratingly, we witnessed some negative social media posts.  We know that students, parents, and even ourselves have different perspectives.  Often individuals can witness the same situation but have very different takeaways.  We can't control what individuals post on social media, but we can reflect and respond with our actions.

Some of the negativity I heard is that our staff don't care, hide behind doors and don't address issues, allow bullying, and are not patient with our kids.  I know these claims are far from the truth and beleive that singular incidents are being projected to be broad truth!

Please continue to show your heartfelt approach of kindness, creativity, compassion, and love in your daily teaching!  Take time to stop and listen, to get down to our students' levels, and share with parents the joy and successes you see within your class.

WINS FOR THE WEEK

  • Coach Vince enjoyed meeting new elementary staff and touching base with veteran staff. He will be back on Oct. 20. More info to come!

  • Charger Assemblies went exceptionally well.

  • PLCs are underway.

  • Another great turnout for the student access day.  Thank you: Jo, Mandy, Mark, Toni, Heidi

Thoughtful Reflection

Where do the majority of our school rules align to, academic or social behaviors?  How do we promote academic behaviors? Do we make intentional connections between the way the social behaviors promote academics?

THE CHARGER PROMISE

"We, as a community, will develop confident,

well-rounded, and sought-after graduates who

are prepared for the future"

POINTS OF INTEREST

Solution Room (ACTION NEEDED)

The Solution is room is staffed all day. April is in from 8 AM to 11:30 AM, and Maureen starts at 11:30 AM. Lunch Detention slips must be turned in the Solution Room by 11 AM.

Please be sure to make calls home on all lunch detentions and referrals. This last week as I was processing referrals and suspensions, I had several parents report that they had not received any concerns from the classroom teacher.

Classroom Walkthroughs (ACTION NEEDED)

Routine walkthroughs will be scheduled on my calendar to help build more frequent visits to the classroom. This week, I am looking for evidence of how you are building positive relationships with students by understanding students' interests and backgrounds.

Possible Evidence:

  • Side conversation with students about events in their lives

  • Design learning experiences that compel students to draw from their social and cultural backgrounds.

  • Develops team-building activities.

  • Utilizes Purposeful People and Character Strong.

  • Promotes students' social-emotional learning,

  • Pauses to listen to students.

Additionally, I am continuing to look for:

  1. Bell to Bell Teaching, we need to make every minute count in our 4-day school week.

  2. Posted learning objective* (Standards), What do we want all students to know and be able to do?

  3. Lesson Segments, Posted on the board, in planning book or on lesson plans

Illness in school

Please remind our students that if they are not welling well to stay home.   We are following guidance from DOH and our local health jurisdiction. Parents can contact the school/school nurse with any questions or concerns.

PBIS

Please be sure to have your classroom posters, charger ticket bin, and store setup. PBIS is a great way to reward students for the positive academic behaviors we desire to see in the classrooms.

MTSS Update and Tip:

  • Benchmark assessments are complete for reading and math (aside from some absences). We still need to do SAEBRS for behavior screening.

  • Several instruction/intervention groups have been established with progress monitoring tools in place.

  • Diane has been meeting with individual teachers to look at screening to intervention reports and identify

Next instructional steps. An email was sent out last week to help you find that information. Diane will be creating some additional reference tools to help you find reports quickly.

How to Build Better Small-Group Reading Instruction

By Education Week on Sep 29, 2022 12:41 PM

Reading teachers have started the school year already in a crunch, with students' reading skills at a 20-year low. As educators look for ways to help students gain ground academically, research suggests refining traditional classroom reading groups could help. Special education professor Matthew Burns talked about how to improve the effectiveness of small-group instruction. Burns said effective small-group reading instruction can cut across different grades and subject areas, but students should be arranged based on the specific skills they need to hone in comprehension, fluency, phonics, and phonemic awareness—rather than overall reading levels.

Halloween Party and Parade

Please plan on having your Halloween parties and school parade on Oct. 27th. Let's plan on starting the Parade at 2:30, and then the classroom parties follow. Remind students that costumes need to be school appropriate and must still conform to the school dress code (MS).

Character Strong Staff Dare

My admin dare is to make three phone calls this week to families of students with whom I have had challenges and celebrate something positive.  Feel free to join me in this dare too.
